Everything you need to know about Waxopacks

Is Waxopack suitable for food?

The combination of natural ingredients with a fabric made of 100% BIO cotton allows the Waxopack to breathe and thus ensure that your food stays fresh for longer. The Waxopack is shapeable, just use the heat of your hands and it adapts to any shape of food or dish.

What is the composition of Waxopack?

The Waxopacks are designed and handmade in our workshop at the foot of the Little Carpathians. With love and emphasis on quality, we select raw materials for production. The Waxopack consists of a mixture of wax from Slovak beekeepers, organic jojoba and coconut oil, pine resin. An important role is played by 100% BIO cotton with a GOTS certificate. The substances from which Waxopack is made are harmless to health and meet the strictest criteria for infant products.

What is the lifespan of Waxopack?

A unique layer is applied to Waxopack, thanks to which it can last a year or more. How long it retains its properties depends on care. For intensive use, we recommend "renewing" the packaging by waxing, simply at home, or send it to us for service.

How to wash the Waxopack?

It is sufficient to rinse with cold or lukewarm water before further use. After washing, do not crumple the Waxopack, but let it dry freely like other dishes. If you need to degrease the Waxopack, a biodegradable detergent without alcohol will be most suitable. Beeswax is soluble in alcohol!

Is the Waxopack hygienic?

Our Waxopacks are easy to wash thanks to their high-quality wax layer. In addition, the wax has antibacterial properties and the pine resin has antifungal properties. Both raw materials have long been used in food storage.

We care about quality, so we regularly send samples for testing to the National Reference Laboratory for food contact materials. Conclusion: "The results of laboratory tests show that from the point of view of health protection, it is possible to recommend the packaging material Waxopack of your production only for direct contact with food, for example bread, sweets, cakes, fruits, vegetables."

How to properly care for Waxopack?

  • After use, gently dust the packaging or wash it in lukewarm water. We let the washed Waxopack dry freely and we can use it again.

  • We sterilize from time to time, while at the same time healing the wax layer. Place the Waxopack on baking paper at 160 ° C for a maximum of 30 seconds in a preheated oven.

Beware of heat and fire!

  • Beeswax is flammable! Therefore, keep your packaging away from flames!

  • Do not expose bees to heat sources such as microwave ovens, ovens or dishwashers.

  • They are not suitable for raw meat, hot foods or liquids.

  • Wraps can be colored from some foods such as beets, blueberries, etc.

Use and storage

Here's how:

  • store at room temperature / in a refrigerator

  • in a backpack on the road, on hiking, at work or at school

  • in the freezer; be careful, food such as pastries may become too dry due to frost

  • opening the lids of jam cups where force is required

Not like this:

  • packaging of raw meat / hot meals

  • washing in warm water, washing machine

  • sources of direct heat, fire

  • cut with a knife on napkins

What if it turns coloured?

Waxopack can be coloured from some foods such as beets, blueberries, etc. Rinse the paint by early rinsing in lukewarm water or with a detergent suitable for washing food.

How to "restore" the Waxopack?

By using Waxopack, the wax layer becomes thinner and the fabric loses its impermeability to liquids as well as its tack. But that doesn't matter at all, Waxopack can easily be restored even at home. Insert the Waxopack between two baking papers and iron a few times with a warm (not hot) iron. If you have 100% beeswax at home, you can gently grind a few grams into the damaged areas and iron.

What about Waxopack at the end of your service?

Pieces of Waxopack cut into strips are great for setting firewood when camping. At the end of its life, it can be used as part of your compost. We recommend cutting into small pieces.

Foil vs Waxopack?

We usually use plastic foils once and then they end up in a landfill, at best in an incinerator. We definitely don't need to introduce you to plastic bags and foils. Their service life is often very short, recycling is almost impossible. A plastic bag will normally decompose in nature in about 25 years but never all the way.

Waxopacks are 100% natural, they do not release any harmful chemicals and by using them we minimize the amount of unnecessary plastics. The packaging is sticky. Therefore, they do not need to be moistened. If the package opens after wrapping, just put it in the fridge for a few minutes and they will solidify again in a new shape. In addition, by purchasing Waxopacks you support the ecological beekeeping craft in Slovakia.

Are Waxopacks prone to mold?

It depends on the amount of mold in the food, in the case of mold cheeses, raw mold will almost certainly also appear in the pores of the Waxopack. Beeswax is naturally antibacterial and pine resin has an antifungal effect, but even these properties do not prevent mold if it is predominant.

Who invented wax wraps?

Historically, beeswax has been used by Egyptians to preserve goods. Later around 1900, people used beeswax wraps to store food or cover containers. We took this concept and gave it its current form.

Why aren't they white?

We refuse to use industrially modified white beeswax.

Do wax wraps smell?

Yes, Waxopacks smell like beeswax, honey. The intensity of the scent fades by use.

Why use Waxopack?

  • It is reusable!

  • Compostable.

  • It is easy to clean - just wipe the package or rinse with lukewarm water.

  • Food stays fresh without "suffocating", the wax layer breathes gently.

  • It is suitable for packaging all foods such as pastries, vegetables, cheeses.

  • The possibilities of using it at home are only up to your imagination.

  • At the end of its service life, it will serve, for example, as a good fire starter.
